New Prince of Peace Statue Installed

The new Prince of Peace statue was installed on November 1, 2006, the feast of All Saints.

The statue is the work of Cleveland sculptor Timothy Riffle. It is a relief carving in a four thousand pound block of Indiana limestone which stands nine feet tall. Jesus is represented in his youth clothed in priestly garb, since he would redeem us by his sacrifice. The three crosses on his robe remind us of our baptism through which we came to share in his victory over sin and death and were reconciled to God as his beloved daughters and sons. He is holding a dove which has an olive twig in its bill(symbols of peace, the Holy Spirit and recalling the dove sent to Noah at the end of the flood). His hair is windblown since he spent much of his ministry teaching on mountain tops and by the sea shore. To the left of the figure is a small fossil shell may be seen.

You may wonder why there is a cat. While timothy was carving the figure, a stray cat came up and has stayed with him since. He also added in a mouse since in God's Kingdom all creatures live in peace("then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat"-Isaiah 11:6). The three doves are also not afraid of the cat, but they have another meaning. In Christian art they represent Jesus' disciples. Here they rest peacefully at the Master's feet listening to his Word. Then they will be sent to carry that Word to the world. The arch is entwined with olive branches which are symbols of peace and that the faithful Christian is like a fruitful olive tree planted in the house of the Lord.
